Job Description

UnderwriteMe is an InsurTech company and subsidiary of Pacific Life Re (PL Re), dedicated to transforming the life insurance industry through innovative data and technology products. Our mission is to make insurance more accessible by enabling the future of underwriting and the future of distribution for our clients.

We are hiring a Mid-Level Software Engineer to join UnderwriteMe's Engineering team to work on our Protection Platform product. The Protection Platform is our B2B SaaS marketplace for financial advisers and brokers that we believe is the future of distribution. It therefore plays a crucial role in achieving the mission.

Currently, we are undergoing a significant business transformation to transition our platform into a SaaS business. This transformation includes significant changes to our business model, platform features, UI/UX, and overall user experience to enhance the value proposition for our customers.

Team outputs/ objectives

1. Evolving the product to reinforce its leading position on the protection market, and to develop new offerings.
2. Implementing simple and efficient solutions to explore product features.
3. Considering data as first-class citizen to support product team decisions and provide valuable insights to our partners.
4. Applying high engineering standards to empower our product in these challenging times. This involves both: contributing to and maintaining our existing systems/codebases and greenfield development as part of our architectural modernisation initiative.

Skills and Experience

1. Strong experience working on the backend of a technology product
2. A proven track record of delivering simple and effective software solutions with a "You Are not Going To Need It" mindset
3. A product mindset: you own the product, you care about customer outcomes, and you want to make data-informed decisions
4. Comfortable working in a team that deals with ambiguity
5. Experience modernizing a software platform incrementally

Essential Technical Experience

1. Delivered real world solutions using a Test-Driven Development (TDD) approach
2. Good understanding of Clean Code and approaches like Ports & Adapters
3. Continuous Delivery (CD) mindset
4. Trunk based development
5. Collaborative approach to building software such as pair programming.
6. API design
7. Delivered reliable, robust and scalable solutions on a Cloud platform.
8. Ownership of the end-to-end software solution including the necessary infrastructure, observability and business metrics.
9. Deep knowledge of our preferred tech stack: Java, Spring Boot, MySQL, k8s, AWS, Datadog

Desirable Technical Experience

1. Exposure to architectural approaches such as modular monoliths or microservices
2. An understanding of Domain Driven Design (DDD) and the use of approaches like Event Storming.
3. Event-driven architectures • Design using an API first approach
4. Integrating and building solutions with our partners such as Auth0, customer.io
5. Good working knowledge of our legacy tech stack: grails, groovy, spock
